The Eternal City | Rome | travel diary

Rome, known today as the eternal city, dates back to the earliest days of our civilisation. It's archaic, ancient ruins show a time that may seem alien to the world we now live in. Preserved over many centuries, Rome now stands as a beautiful city in the heart of Italy. A city where the ancient ruins meet the contemporary lives of its modern people in the most harmonic setting imaginable.

The best way to see a city is to fully immerse yourself in the experience. One way to do this is to use Airbnb; having been apprehensive about using it to book a place to stay, I was proven wrong. The main attractions we wanted to see were within walking distance, and if not the Metro, or like us a hop on/off bus, is the best way to experience Italian society. Going in February seems like a bad idea, but the weather was perfect especially for the walking we did.

Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the one thousand churches in Rome and at night, lights up the square in which it is situated.

Inside I am secretly screaming because my Lizzie McGuire dreams have come true. If you haven't seen the film, I highly recommend it. You'll be singing 'This is what dreams are made of' forevermore.

The Spanish Steps were named after the Spanish Ambassador that used to reside where this church now sits. If you want it to be this empty when you go, I'd highly recommend you go as early in the morning as possible. Don't forget to experience them during the evening, when the lights glitter atop the city landscape from the summit of this masterpiece.

What trip would it be without drooling over some of the biggest designer stores in the fashion industry.

Piazza Novana brings together a beautiful church, surrounded by a square of classic Italian restaurants and gelato shops. At the centre stands this beautiful fountain of ancient Roman architecture.

Both the Roman Forum and the Colosseum highlight the essence of ancient Rome, a must see when visiting the city. The Roman Forum gives a chance to see the changing nature of the city, giving its eternal name full significance.

The Vatican stands as its own separate state, allowing it to be completely objective in world affairs. Once entering the 'borders' of the Vatican where one thousand churchmen and women live, you are able to witness the masterful art within the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican museums. Again, I would advise going early to avoid waiting or purchasing a skip the line ticket or have a guided tour because the line to get in can be disgustingly long.

The heavily decorated ceilings and intricate ancient markings add to the essence of the Vatican. Make sure to witness Michelangelo's Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel, a true artistic masterpiece, made even more significant as you must be completely silent whilst in the Chapel.

The Trevi Fountain. In its focal point stands Oceanus, on his chariot of water showing both the unwavering seas to the left and its serenity to the right. Winding through the side streets of Rome, the fountain stands as a beacon in the dark alleys; the smell of herbs drifting through the air. A certain point in which one should visit when in Rome.

A city that can never be forgotten by any who visits.

Have you ever visited Rome? if so, what's your favourite place?
