A Vegetarian In Mongolia

At the start of this year I decided, after many days of research and watching documentaries, that I would follow a vegan diet.

When I was accepted onto World Challenge, about 18 months ago, I knew even vegetarianism would be difficult in a country like that. So I decided that I would go back to vegetarianism for the trip, instead of being vegan due to the ease of it as most of the group were meat eaters. I thought it would be incredibly difficult to follow a vegetarian diet in a country that the main food was eaten was meat. But I found it was much easier than I thought. It was difficult sometimes as many Mongolians do not know the concept of taking meat out of your diet, but this mostly in the rural areas. In the city there are a wide range of vegetarian restaurants, as well as many vegan ones too. Some people think that being a vegan or vegetarian is so difficult because you cut certain foods out of your diet, but I've found that I eat more of a wide range of food now that I've decide to follow a vegan diet. I try to make my food as creative as possible now that I ever have before and they are delicious. If anyone is deciding to follow a vegan or vegetarian diet, I would definitely try it. Do your research if you're unsure but t was the best health and moral decision I feel I have made. Of course it's not for everyone and I completely respect their decision, as I hope that they respect mine. I feel I have become a lot healthier and have been less bloated by cutting out all animal products. I would strongly recommend the documentary 'Cowspiracy', it was the final piece of the puzzle that turned me vegan but it's incredibly interesting even if your not interested in becoming vegan. I may even put some vegan recipes of meals I have made if you'll be interested in finding out the delicious foods that you can eat on this diet. You're not restricted on a diet like this and this trip has proved that, even in a country like Mongolia, you can be vegan or vegetarian.
